Wednesday, June 21, 2023, 3:30-5:30pm - Dances for the Heart of Summer: Simple and Varied Sacred Circle Dances for More Meaningful Ceremonies

Experience the richness of simple yet powerful circle dance used ceremonially and learn how to include communal dancing-in-the-round in your life.

Participants will be introduced to the tradition of Sacred Circle Dance and how to use it as a tool for Ceremony.  Participants will experience and learn 4-7 hand-picked dances for our time together. The dances will be woven in order to have the experience of The Heart of Summer and how circle dancing can then be a significant part of creating more meaningful Ceremonies.

This experiential workshop introduces participants to the foundational elements for the Guided Shamanic Dance Journey Process the Gaia Dancers have developed through their many years of offering Dance as a Transformational tool in Ceremony.  No experience is required, just your dancing shoes.

In addition to the other things I do as Ceremonialist, I am now a core member of the Gaia Sacred Circle Dancers, with Kathleen Leeson RH, Shamanic Healer & Clinical Herbalist kathleenleeson.ca; & Barbara Carter, Inspired Choreographer & Sacred Circle Dance Leader.

•••

Begin the day rediscovering the value, beauty, and diversity that Ceremony can bring to your life, supported by our expert guidance bringing diverse skills and knowledge on and off the dance floor for the day.

Gaia Sacred Circle Dancers are a collective based in the National Capital Region, dedicated to the revitalization of local Sacred Circle Dance knowledge and its practice as well as the art of Ceremony. We have all spent years becoming educated in and/or teaching this Traditional Knowledge and feel most ‘at home’ in our ancient European roots. Which, these days is generally referred to as ‘The Celtic Tradition.’

Regarding Sacred Circle Dance, it is not affiliated with any religion or set of beliefs; rather we express universal themes and ‘Sacred’ and ‘Spirit’ are used in the broadest sense.

Outline for the Day at the Galilee Centre:

  • 8:15 am – 9:00 am (Optional) Breakfast

  • 9:00 am – 9:15 am – Deep Peace: A Blessing on our day together through music and seated movement

  • 9:15 am – 10:30 am: Ceremony: An Instrument for Living Well with Carrie Fawcett MMus, certified Celebrant, Ceremonialist & Sacred Circle Dance Leader.

  • 10:30 am – 10:45 am:  Break

  • 10:45 am – 12:00 pm: Shamanic Ceremonies: Where They Apply & Their Purpose with Kathleen Leeson RH, Shamanic Healer & Clinical Herbalist

Topics over the morning include:

What is Ceremony?  What is its purpose?  What kinds are there?  What makes it effective? What are some of the tried, tested and true devices used in Ceremony? What does Intention have to do with it?  What do Symbols have to do with it?  What kinds of elements and activities might be included? Where do I start?

In the afternoon, we will offer 2 possibilities for programming:

One option for participants is to introduce you to the device of dance, let you try a few and show you how dance can be utilized to bring more meaning to any Ceremony. Since it is Earth Day, we will focus the dances we bring in order to honour and celebrate The Earth.

For those who wish to, the other option for the afternoon is an introductory workshop that delves into the teachings of the Celtic Wheel of Time.

  • 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch Break

  • 1:00 pm - 4 pm: The 2 concurrent options offered for the afternoon:

  1. Introduction to Sacred Circle Dance: An Experiential afternoon of Learning Simple and Varied Dances for More Meaningful Ceremonies. Led by Barbara Carter, Sacred Circle Dance Leader & Inspired Choreographer, and Carrie Fawcett MMus. Ceremonialist & Sacred Circle Dance Leader.

No experience is required to learn these dances but please wear comfortable clothes you can move in and bring shoes you can dance in. To honour Earth Day 2023 and expand upon Ceremony in your life, our dances will be both ‘earthy’ and have versatile uses:

  • An example of a gathering dance to get an event started, to a song called ‘As One.’

  • ‘The Blessing Dance’ used at weddings, birthdays, baby-welcoming’s ‘and more’ but that we will offer to all life forms.

  • A dance to honour the work of the Galilee Centre e.g., honouring the Spirit in all of Creation.

  • Other earth-themed dances including one from the Celtic Tradition.

Enjoy these hand-picked dances for our time together, from the global circle dance library – a living catalogue of 2500+ dances known amongst teachers – as well as from Barbara and Carrie’s own growing repertoire of original choreographies.

2. The Celtic Wheel of Time with Kathleen Leeson RH, Shamanic

Healer & Clinical Herbalist. Kathleen has been studying, learning, and teaching Herbalism, Shamanism and Wisdom Teachings that come mainly from the Celtic Tradition for 30 years.  She considers herself to be a ‘Celtic’ Shaman.

Over the afternoon we will look at what we now believe about how the Celtic peoples looked at Time and how that influenced their philosophy about life and therefore how to live well. With their unique outlook, they created strong bonds of community and yet valued the individual’s quest for freedom. How did they come to value Wisdom over almost any other societal value? And have we lost this ancestral thread and if we have, can we, and should we, retrieve it?

Date: Sat. April 22nd, 2023, 8:15am - 4pm.

$60.00 includes breakfast, lunch and coffee or tea break.
